A DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS OF THE CHARACTERISTICS AND FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF DAIRY FARMS IN MICHIGAN, NEW YORK, ONTARIO, PENNSYLVANIA AND WISCONSIN AgEcon
Ford, Stephen A.; Gardner, Robert; Gripp, Sharon I.; Harsh, Stephen B.; Knoblauch, Wayne A.; Novakovic, Andrew M.; Putnam, Linda D.; Stephenson, Mark W.; Weersink, Alfons; Yonkers, Robert D..
In 1989, The Cornell Program on Dairy Markets and Policy collaborated with the Texas A&M Agricultural and Food Policy Center to form a National Institute for Livestock and Dairy Policy (NILDP). The Institute is a focal point for a neutral and objective analyses of the consequences of alternative government policies on the livestock, dairy, and poultry industries and the broader economics of livestock and dairy markets. Based on their respective strengths and emphases, Texas A&M is the lead institution on livestock and poultry sector analysis, and Cornell is the lead institution on dairy sector analysis. The Institute has been supported by a special research grant through the U. S. Department of Agriculture since 1989. The Dairy Farm Analysis...

COMPOSITION OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS FACULTIES IN 1862 LAND GRANT INSTITUTIONS AgEcon
Ford, Stephen A.; Herrmann, Robert O..
Survey results of departments of agricultural economics at 1862 Land Grant institutions are reported, giving the numbers of economists working in the areas of agricultural, resource, and community economics. Factor analysis is used to reduce descriptive state-level data in order to explain departmental compositions through regression analysis. Department heads also responded with the area to which a new, free position would be allocated. These responses are compared with residuals from the statistical models to evaluate department head allocation strategies.

EFFECT OF DEBT POSITION ON THE CHOICE OF MARKETING STRATEGIES FOR FLORIDA ORANGE GROWERS: A RISK EFFICIENCY APPROACH AgEcon
Moss, Charles B.; Ford, Stephen A.; Castejon, Mario.
This study examined the relationship between debt position and choice of marketing instrument. Specifically, this study employed first and second degree stochastic dominance, and stochastic dominance with respect to a function to determine whether the efficient marketing instrument changes between debt positions. The results indicate that the choice of marketing instrument does vary with debt position in some marketing periods if the decision-maker is moderately risk averse.

EVALUATION OF ALTERNATIVE RISK SPECIFICATIONS IN FARM PROGRAMMING MODELS AgEcon
Ford, Stephen A.; Ford, Beth Pride; Spreen, Thomas H..
The use of alternative probability density functions to specify risk in farm programming models is explored and compared to a traditional specification using historical data. A method is described that compares risk efficient crop mixes using stochastic dominance techniques to examine impacts of different risk specifications on farm plans. Results indicate that a traditional method using historical farm data is as efficient for risk averse producers as two other methods of incorporating risk in farm programming models when evaluated using second degree stochastic dominance. Stochastic dominance with respect to a function further discriminates among the distributions, indicating that a density function based on the historic forecasting accuracy of the...

HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR PENNSYLVANIA DAIRY FARM MANAGERS AgEcon
Gripp, Sharon I.; Ford, Stephen A..
A survey of more than 1200 Pennsylvania dairy farm managers showed that almost 20% of those managers do not have health insurance. Of those farm managers with health insurance, 67% had insurance acquired through the farm business. Farm characteristics and demographic information were used to determine indicators of health insurance coverage. Age, education, net farm income, off-farm income, milk marketing cooperative membership, and intensity of hired labor use all had significant effects on the likelihood of having health insurance and on whether such insurance was provided by the farm business.

THE EFFECT OF MANAGERIAL ABILITY ON FARM FINANCIAL SUCCESS AgEcon
Ford, Stephen A.; Shonkwiler, John Scott.
The effects of managerial ability on farm financial success are analyzed for a 1990 sample of Pennsylvania commercial dairy farms using structural latent variable techniques. Latent factors related to dairy, crop, and financial management are used with herd size to explain farm financial success, measured by net farm income. Results indicate the relative importance of each management variable toward farm financial success.
